Analysing the effect of operational automation on the performance of inland waterway transport services on the Danube

Logistics and Intralogistics Systems

The gradual advent of automation into transport and logistics operations in general and inland waterway transport in particular has yielded first milestone achievements, such as feasibility proofs of remote-controlled or automated navigation or assisted lock entries. The subsequent
steps include the expansion of the vessel operational tasks to be automated and the in their
integration into existing logistics and supply chain processes. To date, the topic has not been in
the focus of the European research community. The latter is a pivotal prerequisite for major decision-makers to exploit the huge potential linked to operational automation of inland waterway transport as it proves the technical feasibility and
economic viability of automated operations.
