Shift-specific use of different dispatching approaches for vehicle handling on automotive terminals
Maritime and Port LogisticsAutomotive terminals play an important role in finished vehicle logistics by serving as central storage and transshipment points [1,2]. On large terminals, several thousand vehicles have to be moved each shift for transhipment or to receive technical services and performance pressure is increasing for the handling of these vehicles. On the one hand, global vehicle production is increasing; on the other hand, vehicle distribution is characterized by a growing number of turnover per unit [3]. In addition, the customer order decoupling point is being progressively shifted downstream, in some cases extending into the distribution process itself. As a consequence, an increasing share of technical services is performed at automotive terminals, which in turn results in a higher number of vehicle movements per unit within the terminals.
