The next life of mines: repurposing post-mining areas for energy storage
Constructions and Design EngineeringThe gradual phase-out of coal mining and the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources are among the major challenges currently shaping the European energy transition. While variable renewable energy technologies require efficient and flexible storage systems, the closure of mines simultaneously creates extensive post-mining landscapes requiring new functions and long-term redevelopment strategies. These two challenges may be addressed jointly through the conversion of active and abandoned mining areas into energy storage facilities. Such an approach contributes to circular economy principles, supports the just transition of mining regions and enables the reuse of existing infrastructure and anthropogenically transformed landscapes [1-3].
