Reassessing Fatigue Life in Heavy Mining Machinery: The Impact of Dynamic Loads on Undercarriage Structures
Construction and Mining Equipment and TechnologiesThe structural integrity of large-scale material handling and mining equipment is highly dependent on accurately anticipating the complex, time-varying dynamic loads that these machines experience during their multi-decade operational lifespans [1]. Specifically, the scope of this work explores the fatigue vulnerability of the undercarriage components in bucket wheel excavators, which are systematically neglected by widely adopted engineering standards [2]. Although the significant influence of superstructure vibrations on the fatigue degradation of the undercarriage has been explicitly proven in previous studies [3], addressing this issue remains challenging. The vast majority of these mega-machines are built as single-unit productions or in very short series, making iterative design optimization based on historical operation exceptionally difficult.
