DEM-Based Analysis and Redesign of a Wood-Chip Discharge Rotor in a Biomass Production Machine

Constructions and Design Engineering

The transport of wood chips through the discharge system of a biomass production machine is governed by a complex interaction between the supplied bulk material, the rotating impeller blades and the surrounding housing geometry. In the analysed machine, fragmented wood material is transported from the cutting and screening section towards the discharge impeller by screw conveyors. The rotating impeller then captures the supplied material and conveys it through the housing towards the discharge chute. During operation, inadequate blade geometry or an unsuitable clearance between the impeller and the housing may cause non-uniform material flow, local accumulation of wood chips, increased torque demand and intensified particle–wall contacts in specific regions of the discharge system.
