Validation of Numerical Models of an Overhead Crane Through Experimental Dynamic Testing

The dynamic behaviour of overhead crane systems is an important aspect in the assessment of their operational safety, structural reliability and long-term serviceability. Overhead cranes are exposed to a variety of dynamic effects including moving masses, suspended loads, acceleration and deceleration of the trolley system, load oscillations and external dynamic excitation [1–5]. These effects could have a major impact on the global structural response of the crane system, particularly under conditions involving large suspended masses and intricate interaction between the crane structure and the payload. Consequently, accurate prediction and assessment of the dynamic behaviour of overhead cranes constitutes an important engineering task in the fields of structural dynamics, vibration analysis and numerical modelling [2–5].
