Automated Design of Material Handling Equipment: A DSM-supported KBE Approach Navigating toward the Digital Engineering Workplace

Logistics and Intralogistics Systems

Addressing the inherent complexity of multidisciplinary logistics systems, this research proposes a generalizable methodological framework for the automated design of material handling equipment. By combining Knowledge-Based Engineering with Multidisciplinary Design Optimization, the approach aims to significantly reduce Time-to-Quote. The methodology employs structural and function-based Design Structure Matrices to resolve recursive feedback loops and define an optimized execution order within Siemens RuleStream and Siemens NX. Validated through a “Double Track” process that compares automated results against traditional manual engineering, the framework supports a risk-minimized transition toward a Digital Engineering Workplace.
