Optimizing Intersection Control Strategies for Autonomous Mobile Robots

Logistics and Intralogistics Systems

As Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are used increasingly higher numbers within intralogistics systems, managing AMR traffic efficiently becomes a crucial factor to avoid congestions and delayed transports. In this context, intersections play a critical role since for simultaneously arriving AMRs a sequence in which to cross has to be determined to avoid collisions. However, research on intersection control strategies is mainly focused on applications in road traffic and has not yet been applied to AMRs in intralogistics. Therefore, we investigated the influence of several prominent intersection control strategies from road traffic on intralogistics performance by implementing them in a discrete-event simulation model. The subsequent simulation study demonstrates the potential of advanced intersection control strategies for AMRs to reduce waiting times at intersections.
