Evaluating the impact of mobile onboard cranes on the logistics performance of a decentralized waterborne container transportation service
Maritime and Port LogisticsTo relieve road traffic in western Germany, particularly in the Ruhr region, a transportation service concept based on small inland vessels and mobile onboard cranes has been developed for the distribution of containers in the West German canal network. Particularly in view of the mobile onboard crane, the effects of its introduction on process efficiency, cost structure, and service level need to be scrutinized and the economic viability of the entire service to be assessed. With the help of discrete-event simulation, various scenarios of the container distribution service using the mobile onboard cranes for container handling at the remote ports and transshipment locations are examined and compared with a baseline scenario using conventional container transshipment equipment. The results can be used for the finetuning of the container transportation service concept.
