Digital twins in different industry fields – a literature review

Logistics and Intralogistics Systems

This paper provides a review of digital twin implementation in different industry fields. A preliminary analysis of the main fields of digital twin use was performed using bibliometrics and the VOSviewer tool based on keyword use. It was found that the current main application areas of digital twins mostly evolve around technical fields and engineering. Logistics and supply chains were selected as a focal field for further analysis. The yearly output of publications using digital twins in this context was found to be increasing significantly in the last few years and following the growing trend of digital twins’ research. In this specific field, the combination with manufacturing, artificial intelligence and alike is at the forefront, meaning that approaches that focus more on management or supply chain flows have not yet increasingly adopted the benefits of using digital twins.
