The use of numerical methods in cutterhead dredger excavation unit optimization

Authors present a numerical and experimental approach to determine the reasons for not achieving required efficiency of cutterhead dredger. The scan of the cutting disc of the dredger was performed using a 3D scanner. In author’s method, in order to determine the efficiency of the dredger with respect of the cutting tool, numerical methods were implemented: Discrete Element Methods and Rigid Body Dynamics. Authors proposed to determine the efficiency of the dredger as a measure of the change in the load of the cutting disc, thus changing the moment on the wheel and the boom. Numerical simulations were performed for the model currently mounted on machine and for models with altered teeth position. A number of analyzes allowed authors to propose the correct placement of the teeth on the cutting disc. New arrangement of the teeth increased the efficiency of the dredger.

Host city and venue - Belgrade

Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia and a city of very tumultuous history. Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia from 1918 to 1991. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and since ancient times it has been an important traffic focal point, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe. Read more...
