Deep sea mining tailings disposal review

Tailings in deep sea mining industry have become a new challengeable environmental problem. The objective of this paper is to review the existing tailings disposal methods which can be used in DSM industry. Then, an innovated SBDR tailings disposal will be focused on its advantages, disadvantages, and environment recovery based on the tailings transport process.

In this paper, five different tailings disposal methods are compared and analysed including submarine tailings disposal method, riverine tailings disposal method, tailings dam disposal, backfill disposal, and tailings reuse disposals. The comparisons combing with an exact case will show that SBDR is more suitable than the others to be used in DSM tailings disposal. The research in this paper will be useful to speed up the DSM industrialization and be helpful to protect the marine environment and ecology.
