Section: Maritime and Port Logistics
Abstract: The anticipation of containerized cargo has a continuous impact in maritime industry, evolving the role of ports and the variety of services offered by providing access to new key players of the supply chain. Specifically, at an early stage ports were just single interfaces between land and sea transport, while during last years they have been transformed to transport nodes and logistic platforms. In addition, technology innovation, such as the adoption of modern ICT technologies, has a great impact on port transformation since it supports the majority of administrative processes. In this work, a broad survey is performed on the significant role of ports pertaining statistics that display the situation of ports development and transformation. This survey provides an overview of port transformation, with a focus on the most recent advances in the adoption of ports into transport multimodal nodes. The main contribution of this study is to examine issues related with security in port handling by introducing the development of a new perspective in the interaction of channels towards an integrated port management system incorporating risk assessment and security measures. Thus, a more integrated aspect of a port transformed to a transport node and functioning under the integrated supply chain management emerges incorporating also a robust mechanism to address security challenges. The adoption of this security perspective may constitute an emerging trend in the supply chain.
