Model for the conceptual design of unit load warehouse systems through the integrated solution of five sub-problems

Warehouses play a major role in modern supply chains concering performance and costs. These factors are largely determined during the planning phase of warehouse systems. The conceptual design is very complex and the outcome depends strongly on the planners individual knowledge. Science mostly adresses isolated sub-planning-problems, which have low impact on practice.
This paper presents a model to aid the conceptual design of unit load warehouses. This novel approach consists of three modules. The data-integration module is discussed in detail. It automatically generates key values, which are then used in the second module. In this second step the actual sub-problems are adressed. In iterativve circles, different solution options are created. The last module estimates productivity and costs for each option. Taking into account certain qualitative factors it suggestes a final solution.
