A test method to investigate effect of compaction on penetration resistance of iron ore fine

Grabs are often used on dry bulk terminals for unloading bulk carriers loaded with iron ore. Previous research has shown that the penetration depth of grab knives into bulk material is an important success factor to the filling ratio of the grab. The majority of the iron ore products handled by ship grab unloaders can be categorized as unsaturated iron ore fine (IOF) which are sensitive to moisture content and stress levels. The resistance to penetration of IOF cargo is influenced by densification process which occurs during ship loading and during sailing. The aim of this paper is to develop a standardized test method to mimic line contact of grab knives penetrating in compacted iron ore fines. The result obtained from these measurements will be used to determine which DEM parameters and contact model are suitable to accurately simulate interaction of grabs with moist IOF.

Host city and venue - Vienna

Vienna (Wien) is the federal capital and largest city of Austria, and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primate city, with a population of about 1.9 million (2.6 million within the metropolitan area, nearly one third of Austria's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union.  Read more...
